Jacobo Antona-Makoshi, International Automotive Research Scientist

Division of Vehicle, Driver, & System Safety

Global Industry & Policy Support

Dr. Jacobo Antona-Makoshi serves as a research scientist in VTTI’s Division of Vehicle, Driver, & System Safety. In this role, he designs, plans, and manages complex research projects, and delivers results applicable to improve both safety evaluation methodologies and systems design.

Dr. Antona-Makoshi’s previous positions at the Japan Automobile Research Institute and at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have contributed to his 15 years of automotive safety-related research experience. His main fields of expertise are injury biomechanics, road safety, and vehicle safety research and standardization. His technical qualifications include crash and normal driving data collection and analysis; crash, pre-crash, and active safety testing; experimental and computational biomechanics; vehicle safety system development in consideration of occupants’ age and sex; driver behavior and performance analysis; and automated driving system safety evaluation. His past research work also includes the evaluation of vehicle safety technologies (e.g., pre-crash seatbelt, headrests, airbags, AEB, ADAS and ADS) and their impact on public health. The output of several of his research projects has been directly applied to international safety standards and regulations.

Dr. Antona-Makoshi obtained a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnique University of Madrid and both an M.S. in Automotive Engineering and a Ph.D. in Injury Biomechanics from Chalmers University of Technology.
